Vall d'Hebron Barcelona Hospital Campus
Support Centres

The Clinical Laboratories, Biobank and the Blood and Tissue Bank are part of the support centres that complement the work carried out by the rest of the institutions within Vall d’Hebron Barcelona Hospital Campus. Find out about their work within the healthcare complex.

Clinical Laboratories

The Clinical Laboratories are essential to the Hospital and to primary care as the samples processed there are the basic tool for diagnosis. 70% of clinical diagnoses and 80% of the clinical data circulating in the hospital are laboratory results.

Laboratoris Clínics Vall d'Hebron
Our laboratories serve a population of 1.2 million citizens and attend to 6,000 patients a day. They are the largest in Spain and one of the largest in Europe in volume and complexity. With a portfolio of services exceeding 1,000 items, they perform 16 million analyses per year.

Statistics and bioinformatics

The data generated and processed forms the basis of most current research projects. The Statistics and Bioinformatics Unit promotes the use and development of modern statistical and bioinformatics resources for research. It advises, assists and trains experts in this field.
In line with the Campus philosophy, professionals in the unit also promote activities of innovation and development in the field of statistics and bioinformatics, a fact that enables the unit and its services to function better.

Advanced technology

The research centres make the latest technology available to research and teaching staff, with advice from specialised professionals. These facilities offer researchers the most advanced tools to work in areas such as genomics, bioinformatics, proteomics, cytomics and microscopy.

The added value is supervision and training of professionals, who from the very beginning collaborate on research projects, from their conception to processing the final results. The Advanced Technology departments work closely with companies in the sector to understand the latest cutting-edge technology and make it available to researchers.

Biobank

The Biobank is an essential basic service in research. At Vall d’Hebron there are currently 25,000 biological samples collected for use in research projects and grouped into nine collections: tumours, foetal tissue, immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMID), paediatric endocrinology, cardiology, immunology, pulmonary disease, nephrology and sepsis.
The Campus Biobank is part of the national register of biobanks authorised by the Generalitat of Catalonia and recognised by many competent bodies. We also offer sample processing services and this work is closely linked to the Clinical Research Ethics Committee.

Laboratory animal department

In addition to teaching, the use of animals in the laboratory is an important part of clinical research. The facilities and all the activity carried out is closely controlled and complies with current legislation. There is also a dedicated and independent Animal Experimentation Ethics Committee.
The department’s aim is to provide resources and support to research staff, at the same time as ensuring the maintenance, care and well-being of the animals used in research.

Blood and Tissue Bank

The Blood and Tissue Bank (BST) is a public company under the Generalitat of Catalonia’s Department for Health, which has permanent offices at Vall d’Hebron University Hospital. This bank has a dual mission: on the one hand, to guarantee good use of the supply of blood and tissue, and on the other, to develop advanced immunological therapies and diagnoses.
The RAPID programme (Rapid and Advanced diagnosis and treatment of Primary ImmunoDeficiencies) is the result of collaboration between Vall d'Hebron Hospital and the Blood and Tissue Bank. This programme detects and treats patients with severe immunodeficiencies. It speeds up the search for stem cell transplant donors, a procedure that halts the disease.
