Stem Cells and Cancer

Grup de cèl·lules mare i càncer a Vall d'Hebron

The group is focusing on developing small molecule drugs that inhibit the key molecular targets for survival of latent cancer stem cells (CMC). Studying how some epigenetic factors impose latent core properties in lower CMC populations in solid tumours. Equally, evaluating the efficacy of new combined treatments with Wnt/beta-catenin inhibitors in colon cancer, and being able to identify molecular determinants of sensitivity to therapeutic Wnt/beta-catenin inhibitors.

Description

The group’s strategic working lines are describing the key molecular mechanisms responsible for the self regeneration of stem cells in colon cancer (CoCSC); identifying the main molecules responsible for metastasis development in colon cancer. As well as determining the importance of new transcription factors as the nuclear effectors of the Wnt/beta-catenin signalling in colon cancer.

It is working on testing the efficacy of known and new drugs for CoCSC, paying particular attention to the molecular mechanisms involved in the resistance to chemo and metastasis.
