The advanced minimally invasive surgery simulation programme is aimed at surgical interns in the General and Digestive Surgery Department, the Gynaecology Department, the Urology Department, the Paediatric Surgery Department and the Thoracic Surgery Department.

The training programme runs throughout all the years of the residency programme and consists of two parts: a first part focusing on theoretical content; and a second, practical part based on the simulation and training of technical procedures before they are reproduced in real-life surgery.

To carry out the programme, Vall d’Hebron has set up a new space in the Simulation Area that is equipped with five active pelvitrainers which are permanently at the disposal of participating residents. An endoscopy simulator has also been added this year. The exercises get progressively more difficult.

By participating in this simulation programme, residents acquire basic knowledge of instruments, working elements and elementary concepts of advanced minimally invasive surgery. They also develop specific manual skills such as eye-hand-monitor coordination through depth perception, bimanual coordination, correct tissue handling and efficiency in each movement and in general to perform operations.
