The building will have an area of 16,792 m2 dedicated to research and will house the latest technology in the field of advanced therapies.
The countdown to the construction of the new Vall d’Hebron research building has started. For a few days, the building of the old hospital laundry is being demolished to make way for the space where the research of the future will be born.
Thus, for three months the tasks of demolishing the building of the old laundry and the dining room of the Old School of Nursing will be carried out. This is the prior step to the construction of the new research building, which is scheduled to begin during the first half of 2021. These works are part of the Vall d’Hebron Campus transformation plan, which includes among its objectives to become a space that is environmentally cleaner, more eco-sustainable and that ends road congestion, facilitates internal traffic and is open to neighbors.
The new research building will have a total area of 16,792 m2 and will house the research laboratories, the administration and research support part, and part of the VHIR scientific-technical services portfolio.
In addition, it will house the latest technology in the field of advanced therapies, particularly in gene therapy, and it is also expected to have a new cyclotron that will allow the development of new diagnostic and treatment tools based on radioisotopes, an area of maximum expansion to international level where Vall d’Hebron Campus is already a benchmark today.
The new facilities will allow researchers to continue their cutting-edge and disruptive research, to keep innovating and guaranteeing the improvement of people’s quality of life. The fact of moving from several locations to a large space will allow sharing knowledge and experiences, promoting synergies between different groups, increasing transversality and feeling even more cohesive and prepared to give more service to society.
Vall d’Hebron Campus will also become and architectural landmark in Barcelona with a building with its own identify and representative of the values of innovation and excellence that has been designed by BAAS Arquitectura y Espinet / Ubach.
