Creada el 1967, la Unitat de Rehabilitació Infantil i Paràlisi Cerebral de Vall d'Hebron és una de les més veteranes de l'Estat i atén entre 2000 i 2.500 pacients l'any.
Avui se celebra el Dia Mundial de la Paràlisi Cerebral, un grup de trastorns del neurodesenvolupament que es produeixen a conseqüència d'una lesió cerebral no evolutiva en un cervell immadur. És la causa més freqüent de discapacitat infantil. Es manifesta amb alteracions motrius, sensorials, perceptives, cognitives, del llenguatge, de la conducta i epilèpsia, juntament amb problemes musculoesquelètics que condicionaran de manera important els pronòstics d'aquests nens.
“La Unitat de Paràlisi Cerebral atén aquests pacients i s'ocupa de la seva transició a l'edat adulta, un cop superen els divuit anys els continuem portant nosaltres, de manera que coneixem de primera mà la seva evolució i les seves necessitats”, destaca la Dra. Esther Toro, metge especialista en Medicina Física i Rehabilitació que treballa a la Unitat de Rehabilitació Infantil i Paràlisi Cerebral juntament amb la Dra. Mar Meléndez i el Dr. Daniel Pedrera. En formen part també els fisioterapeutes Claudia Fernández, Núria García i Denys Santa Marina, així com les terapeutes ocupacionals Esther Olalla i Laura Grossi.
Els trastorns que aborda la Unitat de Rehabilitació Infantil i Paràlisi Cerebral de Vall d'Hebron són molt heterogenis pel que fa a la seva severitat: de pacients que poden caminar i fer una vida més autònoma a altres que presenten discapacitats més importants. “Els metges fem la revisió i el seguiment clínic d'aquests pacients i treballem de forma coordinada amb els fisioterapeutes i els terapeutes ocupacionals, també orientem els pares i resolem els seus dubtes sobre com poden atendre aquests infants en el seu dia a dia”, exposa la Dra. Esther Toro.
