Speaker: Maria Teresa Buongiorno. Research Group on Neurovascular Diseases of the Vall d'Hebron Research Institute (VHIR).
Brief CV: For the past 20 years I have dedicated my professional career to the care of patients with movement disorders and dementias at university hospitals. Concurrently, my research activities have focused on the clinical, biological, and neuroimaging factors associated with the development of cognitive impairment in Alzheimer's disease and alpha-synucleinopathies, with special interest in the involvement of the glymphatic system. I am engaged in professional and research activities at Vall d'Hebron University Hospital.
Abstract: The glymphatic system is a recently described functional system involved in the clearance of brain waste. Its functional unit is composed by the astrocytes, containing aquaporin 4 water channels, perivascular spaces, and capillaries. It has been suggested that it has a key role in the etiology and progression of neurodegenerative diseases. In this talk, I will briefly review through the available preclinical and clinical evidence, how hemodynamic factors, genetic variability, pharmacological modulation and neuroinflammation modify the glymphatic function. A global research framework integrating all of these factors will be proposed highlighting knowledge gaps and new hypotheses.
