Laura Ludovica Gramegna, MD, neuroradiologist and principal investigator of the Stroke Research Group. My work integrates translational neuroscience, interventional neuroradiology, and advanced neuroimaging. I lead multidisciplinary projects translating molecular knowledge of cerebral vascular malformations into innovative treatments. I coordinate clinical trials in interventional neuroradiology and develop MRI- and CT-based biomarkers for ischaemic and haemorrhagic vascular diseases.

Curriculum

I graduated in medicine in 2012, specialised in neuroradiology in 2017, and obtained a PhD in Neuroscience in 2023.
As a lecturer at the University of Bologna, I combined teaching, clinical practice, and research. I have expertise in neurological disease pathophysiology, genetics, and advanced neuroimaging biomarkers, and trained at University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE). I have also trained in design thinking to address complex problems through empathy, creativity, and experimentation.
I collaborate with VHIR groups, particularly the Interventional Neuroradiology Research Team led by Dr Alejandro Tomasello, and with Barcelona institutions, including IRSJD, ICN2, the University of Barcelona, and Hospital del Mar. I also participate in international projects with the University of Bologna and the university hospitals of Oxford and Cambridge.
I currently coordinate three research projects funded through public-private partnerships, including CaixaResearch Health, and co-supervise doctoral theses and master's dissertations. I am the author or co-author of 68 high-impact publications and have an h-index of 20.
My research focuses on innovative, minimally invasive therapies for cerebral arteriovenous malformations, the glymphatic system in dural fistulas, and clinical trials on cerebral aneurysms. I also advance neuroradiological image analysis to develop clinically applicable biomarkers for vascular and neurodegenerative diseases.
My main scientific contribution is a multidisciplinary, translational approach that integrates diverse perspectives to address complex clinical challenges, including molecular treatments for cerebral arteriovenous malformations.
