In addition to providing multidisciplinary care for patients of all ages who suffer this condition, the objectives of Vall d’Hebron Hospital’s Hereditary Angioedema Unit include teaching and research in this field.
The Hereditary Angioedema Unit (UAEH) of Vall d’Hebron University Hospital’s Allergology Department has been treating patients with this disorder for more than 25 years.
UAEH outpatients are treated by allergology specialists in a multidisciplinary manner in the Outpatient Clinic in the Old Nursing School and in the Children’s and Women’s Hospital, ensuring transference and continuity of care from childhood through to adulthood for this genetic, lifelong condition.
The Unit is made up of popular, immunologists, geneticists, gynaecologists, maxillofacial surgeons, pharmacists and nurses, who are responsible for:
Depending on the type of care to be given to patients with diagnosed hereditary angioedema and their profile, they should be treated by the following divisions and/or units:
The specialists who work in the adult and paediatric allergology sections are responsible for treating patients aged 16 and under in the Children’s Hospital areas and subsequently facilitating their transfer and continuity of care with monitoring to the adult care departments in the Old Nursing School and the Allergology Day Hospital in the General Hospital.
The Hereditary Angioedema Unit (UAEH) offers an outpatient service to monitor patients with this disease: the Outpatient Clinic on the second floor of the Old Nursing School. Also, as it is a multidisciplinary unit, and depending on the type of patient (child, adult, pregnant woman), it provides care in a number of departments and units in the Children’s and Women’s Hospital, the General Hospital and A&E.
The nursing team specialises in education and specific care for patients with this disease.
Emergency care is provided at the Children’s Hospital for patients up to the age of 16 and at the General Hospital from the age of 17. The professionals who work in the A&Es have been trained to recognise the symptoms of this disease and to quickly provide its specific treatment.
When a patient needs a complex dental or maxillofacial procedure they will be assessed by the hospital’s maxillofacial surgeons and their operation will be organised with the suitable prophylaxis.
The Obstetrics, Foetal Medicine and Anaesthesia Departments have created a Working Unit for High-Risk Pregnancies for women with hereditary angioedema with the aim of monitoring the well-being of mother and child during pregnancy and of providing care during the delivery and postpartum period in accordance with a protocol specific to their type of hereditary angioedema and clinical situation. Care is also provided for high-risk postpartum cases.
In parallel to these services, there is also a reproductive counselling clinic for women with hereditary angioedema. The clinic is part of the Hereditary Angioedema Unit, and is that provided in conjunction with Gynaecology in the Outpatient Clinics of the Children’s and Women’s Hospital.
In this clinic an allergist and a gynaecologist combine their expertise to determine, in accordance with the patient’s clinical situation and type of hereditary angioedema, the possible effects of their having children. Their mission is to provide information and advice in relation to family planning and the reproductive possibilities of the patients living with this disease.
The main purpose of the Gynaecology Department is to offer constant, up-to-date expert service to all women in our area of influence. On the other hand, as are a level three hospital, we are leaders in high-level techniques and technologies.
Our Department is one of the finest in the country, especially for oncology, for cancer of the breast and lower female genitalia. These are complex pathologies whose treatment must take a multidisciplinary approach. Thanks to the support we receive from multiple specialists, we are proud to offer a high-quality service.
Coordinating with primary care services and providing comprehensive care from the very first point of contact are both essential aspects of the service. This is necessary for women of all ages, from paediatric gynaecology, paediatric endocrinology, gynaecological pathologies, pre-invasive lesions, which can be precursors to cancer, and malignant tumours in both the genitalia and the breast, menopause and post-menopausal pathologies.
Our overall objective is to provide care for patients in our area of influence, including gynaecological care, as well as training and healthcare prevention measures and, at the same time, we aim to become a Centre of Excellence for certain pathologies, such as high-complexity surgeries.
The specific objectives of the healthcare division are, firstly, to provide medical care as urgently as possible in presumably benign pathologies. For all patients with either presumptive or confirmed diagnosis of neoplasia (abnormal formation of a new tissue, benign or malignant tumour), both gynaecological and mammary, immediate care must be provided. Finally, we must review and produce protocols and clinical guides for all the most common pathologies.
In all cases, we aim to carry out surgical treatment of gynaecological and mammary neoplasms when indicated with as short a waiting time as possible between diagnosis, histology and surgery.
In addition to the subspecialties that are traditionally related to the field, the Gynaecology Department at Vall d'Hebron University Hospital has for several years now also incorporated gynaecological endoscopic surgery: laparoscopy and hysteroscopy. These account for almost 50% of the scheduled operations performed by the Department and most of them are carried out as outpatients, in the day hospital.
This Unit carries out diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of benign gynaecological pathologies that require surgical treatment using laparoscopic treatment.
The Major Outpatient Surgery Unit is located on the 3rd floor of the Maternity and Children's Hospital, next to the three operating theatres where the Endoscopy Unit and Post-Surgical Resuscitation Division carry out most of their operations.
The surgical area on the 3rd floor is home to the day hospital for major outpatient surgery, with capacity for 6-7 patients in each surgical session. Activity is divided into: four weekly surgical sessions for laparoscopy and one for hysteroscopy. The hospitalisation area is located on the 9th floor of the Maternity and Children's Hospital, with clinics on the 4th floor, where we carry out three modules per week.
At the Pere Virgili Health Park, where we have an operating room, there is a fortnightly module for low-complexity outpatient surgery. Since June 2009, we also offer the possibility of robotic assistance using the Da Vinci system, for more complex endoscopic procedures.
The Gynaecological Oncology and Lower Genital Tract Pathology Unit is a part of the Gynaecology Department. It treats all genital cancer diseases in the Hospital's catchment area, as well as more complex cases with requirements that exceed the capacity of other health centres in Catalonia.
Our mission is to provide effective, efficient and quality healthcare in the treatment of diseases. Our guiding principle is comprehensive care, where treatment, teaching and research combine to offer the public the highest quality competitive service.
We treat complex pathologies that require multidisciplinary care in which professionals from different disciplines work together. The future of gynaecological oncology pathology is promising, and we have excellent results: between 80% and 90% of cases are resolved with non-invasive surgery, be it laparoscopic, robotic or vaginal. This helps improve the quality of life of our patients.
We work to continue making progress, not only in the care we provide, but also in basic research, which will ultimately improve the care our patients receive. Our mission is for the Gynaecological Oncology and Lower Genital Tract Pathology Unit to lead the way as a cutting-edge centre of excellence with the latest technology, both within the Hospital and in the Catalan public health system as a whole.
At the General and Digestive Surgery Department we provide care for patients who need surgical treatment. The professional team is divided into subspecialties, which means our professionals have a high degree of knowledge in various specific areas. This high level of specialisation, together with our research, is key to offering the best service and maintaining our place as leaders, both in Spain and in Europe, in the treatment of various diseases.
The General and Digestive Surgery Unit is divided up into four independent sub-units, each of which is a benchmark in its sub-speciality: The Colon and Rectal Surgery Unit, the Endocrine, Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Unit, the Oesophagogastric Surgery Unit and the Abdominal Wall Surgery Unit.
This Department carries out activity across several areas: hospitalisation, emergencies, outpatient clinics and in local primary care centres: Chafarinas and Sant Andreu. Outpatient and walk in surgery is carried out at the Pere Virgili Health Park.
Our team of professionals are also members of various multidisciplinary teams, such as the Breast Pathology and Gynaecological Oncology Surgery units, both part of the Gynaecology Department. This multidisciplinary working method, together with our high level of specialisation, allow us to offer our patients the highest quality care.
The Surgical Block, which opened in 2016, means we can work in integrated operating theatres equipped with all the latest technology, which guarantees the highest quality and safety in surgery, ultimately leading to the best quality of care for our patients.
The General Surgery Service is part of the Research Institute’s General and Digestive Surgery Research Group (VHIR), as recognised by the Catalan government's University and Research Grant Management Agency (AGAUR) (2017 SGR 1476)
At Vall d'Hebron University Hospital, we have a teaching unit that trains postgraduate students in general and digestive surgery. We regularly organise continued education courses accredited by the Catalan Council for Continuing Education in the Health Professions, and we actively participate in teaching as part of the medical degree course at the Vall d'Hebron University Hospital Teaching Unit, part of the Faculty of Medicine of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) and the PhD Programme of the Surgery Department of the UAB.
Residents in Obstetrics and Gynaecology undergo ongoing and tutored learning throughout their training, enabling them to acquire in-depth knowledge of the physiology and pathology of the lower female genitalia, pregnancy and birth.
Obstetrics and gynecology training itinerary
The Obstetrics and Gynaecology Teaching Unit trains residents in the physiological and pathological aspects of human reproduction, and also pregnancy, birth and post-partum care, and their disorders. It also deals with the organs that make up the female genital tract and breast care. Related preventative, psychic, and social aspects are also within its scope.
