At the Paediatric Nephrology Department, we are specialised in studying and treating children with kidney disease to fulfil their physical, psychological, emotional and social development. The highly sophisticated level of technology at our practice, in conjunction with medical advances, means more and more children survive acute or chronic kidney disease.
Our Department is aimed at preventing kidney disease in children through early diagnosis, including prenatal diagnosis. In the case of children with chronic kidney disease in substitute treatment, we offer vital support with dialysis techniques. In the case of chronic terminal kidney disease, we offer kidney transplants as the best therapy.
Our team uses extracorporeal techniques, both in primary renal pathology and for preserving and prolonging the functionality of the kidney transplant (plasmapheresis, immunoabsorption, etc.).
We provide care and treatment for children with non-kidney pathologies with an impact on kidney function, especially in patients with chronic pathologies, such as solid organ transplants, bone marrow transplants and syndromes that affect the kidney, survivors of chemotherapy and nephrotoxicity.
Vall d'Hebron Hospital was the first centre in Spain to carry out a liver transplant in a child in 1985.
The Nephrology Department offers comprehensive care for people with various kidney diseases. We offer a peritoneal dialysis programme and a haemodialysis service, in which different blood cleansing techniques are applied. Our transplant programme is one of the most active in the country.
At the Nephrology Department we have a highly qualified team that is well coordinated with other Hospital and primary care services to offer a comprehensive approach to patients with kidney disease, ranging from prevention and early detection to treatment of the disease.
We admit 1,000 patients annually, hold 15,000 consultations and have a peritoneal dialysis programme, a haemodialysis unit, extracorporeal cleansing techniques, and in addition over the last year we carried out 130 kidney transplants.
We are a Reference Centre of the Spanish National Health System (CSUR) in complex glomerular diseases.
Our research is based on patient follow-up and the study of mechanisms and markers of the prognosis for different kidney diseases as reflected in various publications. The Department participates actively in international clinical trials.
This includes the teaching of undergraduates and postgraduates, training nephrology students and continuing education.
The Nephrology Teaching Unit is led by the Nephrology Department, with participation from the Digestive System, Cardiology, Internal Medicine, Intensive Care Medicine, Infectious Diseases and A&E Departments.
Nephrology training itinerary
The Nephrology Teaching Unit has a resident training programme with the following key tracks: extensive training in internal medicine, specific training in nephrology, in-depth knowledge of treatment techniques for renal failure, practical knowledge on diagnosis and therapies in nephrology, and practical knowledge of the role of the nephrologist in community healthcare.
