Cada episodi de neutropènia febril (NF) que presenta un nen amb càncer durant el seu tractament amb quimioteràpia requereix a) hospitalització, b) tractaments antimicrobians, c) exàmens de laboratori, d) imatges i eventualment e) hospitalització en unitats de pacient crític. És fonamental poder comptar amb un maneig precoç, racional i personalitzat dels episodis de NF, apuntant a tres aspectes fonamentals: una adequada estratificació de risc d'infeccions significatives, una bona presa de decisions per obtenir el millor resultat clínic i una optimització de l'ús de els recursos dels sistemes de salut.
