The Vall d'Hebron Advanced Clinical Simulation Centre consolidates its instructor training program in healthcare simulation

The Simulation Centre has trained more than 650 professionals in basic and advanced courses to create a core of instructors capable of leading teaching with simulation inside and outside the hospital.

The Vall d’Hebron Advanced Clinical Simulation Centre has made instructor training a strategic pillar to promote teaching through simulation inside and outside the Hospital. The objective is to have a group of instructors trained to design and conduct clinical training based on simulation with a direct impact on the quality of care and patient safety.

Since the first edition, held in 2019, 676 professionals have already completed one of the available courses: basic and advanced internal and external or virtual modality.

  • Internal basic training: 325 participants
  • External basic training: 144 participants
  • Internal advanced training: 23 participants
  • External advanced training: 12 participants
  • Virtual modality: 172 participants

This training commitment allows for more and more professionals with teaching skills in clinical simulation, capable of leading sessions where technical and non-technical skills such as teamwork and decision-making in critical situations are worked on.

Training instructors is the key to being able to do clinical simulation: within the Hospital we generate a quarry of professionals prepared to transmit knowledge and train teams in an immersive way, in safe environments. We do this both in training in the Simulation Centre itself and by promoting on-site simulations, in the same work environments, which facilitates the training of multidisciplinary teams”, explains Dr. Mónica Rodríguez, director of the Simulation Centre.

One of the outstanding innovations is the virtual modality, which uses the SIMOONS platform, developed at Vall d’Hebron. This tool makes it easier for professionals to train in conducting clinical simulation sessions without having to be physically at the Centre, thus expanding the scope of the training and making it accessible to professionals from other territories.

In the coming months, the program will continue to expand its advanced and external editions, with the aim of consolidating itself as a benchmark in the training of trainers in clinical simulation at a national level.

Finally, all these initiatives are included within the new SIMPRO program, the comprehensive training itinerary aimed at professionals who want to use the simulation methodology for training purposes. SIMPRO includes specific lines for simulation instructors/facilitators, standardized patients, citizens, simulation technicians and centre managers, with the aim of developing diverse and complementary profiles that guarantee the excellence and sustainability of clinical simulation.

Since 2019, more than 650 professionals have taken one of the instructor courses.
