I am Dr. Carles Rubio Maturana, a postdoctoral researcher in the Microbiology Group at the Vall d'Hebron Research Institute (VHIR). I work within the Parasitology and International Health Group of the Microbiology Service, as well as at the Drassanes–Vall d'Hebron International Health and Communicable Diseases Centre. My research focuses on clinical microbiology and the application of artificial intelligence to the diagnosis of infectious diseases. I am also an Associate Professor in the Department of Physics at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), where I teach courses in Biophysics and Climate Change. In addition, I am an Assistant Lecturer at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), where I teach in several master's degree programmes related to international cooperation and translational research.

Curriculum

I hold a Bachelor's degree in Biotechnology from the Faculty of Biology at the University of Barcelona, a Master's degree in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology from the Faculty of Physics at the University of Barcelona, and a PhD in Microbiology from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. My doctoral thesis was awarded the 2025 PIONER Prize by the Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation (FCRI). I have also completed training in artificial intelligence at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC).

My international research experience includes projects at Hospital Nossa Senhora da Paz in Cubal, Angola, where I worked on the validation of an automated diagnostic system for malaria and urogenital schistosomiasis. I have also contributed to European projects focused on improving vaccination strategies for migrant populations and collaborated with pharmaceutical industry partners to validate and implement automated microscopy-based diagnostic systems within routine hospital clinical practice.

Prior to my current position, I spent nearly two years conducting research at the Institute for Molecular Biology of Barcelona (IBMB-CSIC) and the Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology of the University of Barcelona (IN2UB), where I worked on projects related to cellular development and gene therapies for prostate cancer.
